"Mr Ham, just be honest with me."
The mother looks serious, so I nod.
"Do you think my son is naturally stupid?"
I nearly laugh. Not because it's funny. Because I know exactly which student she means.
And no. He isn't stupid. He learns differently. I won't say his name. He finished in the top ten of my class.
That's why I'm careful when a student tells me: "Ham, I'm not smart."
I've heard that hundreds of times, and most of the time the student isn't stupid. They're frustrated.
We don't all learn the same way. Some by writing it down. Some by teaching it to someone else. Some need silence, some need music, some need to go round the same thing ten times before it sticks.
Plenty of people think they're bad at learning when really they haven't worked out how their own brain does it.
So stop asking "am I smart?" and start asking "how do I learn best?"
I've seen average students turn excellent and talented ones stay exactly where they started. The difference usually wasn't talent. It was what they did after class. How they practiced. How they handled being wrong.
When you understand how you learn, you stop fighting your brain and start working with it.
Which matters, because learning doesn't stop when school does. That's when it starts.
Who you are in ten years gets decided by what you choose to learn once the homework stops.
