You Can't Remember Everything

Don't Keep Everything In Your Head

Note 028 of 62 · 162 words · Find Your Way Into The Real World

Work teaches you fast that your brain isn't a storage room.

You can try to keep it all in there. Tasks. Names. Deadlines. Messages. Promises. But the more you carry, the more starts falling off the shelf.

One of my first jobs had far more moving parts than I expected. Calls. Messages. Deadlines. Requests.

I tried remembering everything. That worked for about three days.

Then things started slipping. A missed task here. A forgotten email there. Nothing dramatic, but enough to cause problems.

That's when I understood it properly. Your brain is for thinking. Not for holding a hundred reminders.

Which is why reliable people build systems. Notes. Calendars. Checklists.

Not because their memory is bad. Because they don't want small promises to quietly disappear.

You don't get trusted only for being talented. You get trusted because things don't get lost with you.

People rely on the ones who write things down.

Reliability is making sure the important things don't get lost.
