Listen For What Is Under The Words

Note 050 of 62 · 254 words · Learn How To Deal With People

"I'm fine."

That doesn't always mean fine. Sometimes it means "I don't know how to explain this." "I don't want to bother anyone." "I'm embarrassed." "I'm not ready to talk yet."

The words are simple. What's underneath usually isn't.

People don't always tell you what's wrong. Not because they're being dishonest. Sometimes they can't explain it. Sometimes they're embarrassed. Sometimes they don't want the conflict. Sometimes they haven't worked it out themselves.

So instead of "I'm overwhelmed," you get "I'm just tired." Instead of "I'm disappointed," they go quiet. Instead of "I need help," they insist they're fine.

The words tell part of it. Rarely all of it.

Which is why good communication is more than hearing. It's staying curious. Changes in tone. Changes in behavior. Changes in energy. The things someone suddenly stops mentioning. The things they avoid. The things they keep coming back to.

It's easy to assume too fast. They said tired, so we decide it's tiredness. They said fine, so we leave it.

People respond better to curiosity than to assumptions. Ask gently. Listen a bit longer. Give them room to explain.

Sometimes "is everything okay?" opens a whole conversation. Sometimes it doesn't. Either way, asking shows you noticed. And being noticed is often what someone needed first.

Understanding somebody is rarely about finding the perfect words. It's about paying attention to the whole picture. What they say. What they do. What changed. What didn't.

Communication is understanding the person behind the words. And those aren't always the same thing.
