"Ham, I'm the older brother. I have to be an example."
He says it quietly. Not showing off. More like he's carrying something heavy and trying not to complain about it.
He isn't only choosing for himself. He's choosing with his siblings in the room. His family. Everyone watching him.
And when responsibility sits that heavy, life starts to look very small.
Then he says the thing that stayed with me.
"I feel like I only have one real option."
University. Good degree. Don't mess it up.
That was the whole plan.
University can be a good path. It just isn't the only one, and that's the part I wish more students understood.
Pressure shrinks your world. You start seeing two choices. Win or fail. University or nothing. This path or shame.
Life usually has more than that.
Work first and study later. Take online courses. Learn a skill. Find an apprenticeship. Build something small. Try one path and adjust. Combine two.
The more options you can see, the less trapped you feel.
It's like a restaurant where the waiter offers you two dishes. Of course it feels stressful. Then you see the full menu and you settle. You can compare. Think. Pick what suits you.
The first option is rarely the only one. And it's rarely the best one.
Before you panic, look around. There's probably a path you haven't spotted yet.
