Your First Job Will Probably Suck

Note 025 of 62 · 244 words · Find Your Way Into The Real World

The first job has a way of humbling you.

Not dramatically. A long shift. A difficult customer. A task you've done forty times. A manager asking you to fix something that wasn't your fault.

And suddenly work looks nothing like the version in your head.

I remember one week at my first job that felt like the longest week of my life. Every day slow, the work repetitive, the customers difficult, the hours longer than anyone told me.

I remember thinking: is this what working is?

Before you start, it's easy to picture the clean version. A career. Money. Interesting projects. A nice office. A title that sounds like something.

Almost nobody pictures answering angry emails, or doing the same task over and over, or being tired before the day is finished.

That's usually the first version of work you meet. And that's fine.

Looking back, that job taught me things school couldn't. How to deal with people. How to show up when I didn't feel like it. How to stay professional while frustrated. How to keep going when the work wasn't exciting.

At the time I thought I was just doing a job. Years later I realized I was collecting things I'd use in every job after it.

Your first job may not be the one you wanted. It can still teach you what you'll need.

The most valuable thing you take from a job is the person you become while doing it.
