Some relationships spend too much time living in the future.
Things will be better when we graduate. When we move. When we have more money. When they change.
But the relationship is happening now, and now still counts.
That's where people get stuck. They stop looking at what's in front of them and start building with what they hope arrives later.
It's possible to fall in love with potential. Who someone could become. The future they keep describing. The version of them you keep waiting for.
A relationship is built with the person standing in front of you. The one who keeps showing you patterns.
Everybody makes mistakes. Everybody has bad days. That's normal. Patterns are different.
How does this person treat you when they're frustrated? How do they handle responsibility? How do they respond when things don't go their way?
Character shows itself in patterns. Not speeches. Not apologies repeated every week. Not promises made after every argument.
Which is why warning signs matter. Dishonesty. Disrespect. Manipulation. Controlling behavior.
Most red flags don't look big at the start. They look small enough to explain away, so people explain them away. Ignored problems rarely shrink. They get more expensive.
Love is what someone keeps showing you.
Potential matters. Behavior matters more. Patterns matter more.
Because the person you're with today is the one you're actually building with. Not the one you hope turns up eventually.
Believe patterns. Not promises.
